Now More Than Ever

Paying calls to each of the classrooms in the early weeks of school is always a revelation. I have so much admiration for children of all ages as they learn to navigate this thing called school, and I feel recommitted to the Montessori philosophy every time I observe these busy communities.
In an age where it often feels as if there is too much extraneous or false data, it is more important than ever to have children who learn and practice observation, analysis, concentration and discernment; joyfully engaging with the essential.
The Artful Introduction Our multiage classrooms allow for managed change, with new students surrounded by experienced peers, serving as examples and mentors. Tending to the community, whether it is taking attendance, viewing the weather, or watering the plants is modeled by the children from the very first day.

Purpose and Procedure
The Montessori materials are a visible curriculum, prompting curiosity as well as providing practice. There is a deep satisfaction in each step of the learning process. Whether it is a practical life skill (like sweeping or standardized test taking) or a mathematical process (making tens or deriving square roots), challenges are presented, with intriguing paths to solution and connection. The Montessori pedagogy promotes both convergent and divergent thinking.
